Job Description

The Head of Football (AFL) is responsible for the successful, long-term development of the School's Football program, in particular the standard of coaching, through all year levels.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Assess and sign the Football (AFL) risk management forms.
  • Lead players and coaches through a professional program, aiming to develop areas of individual and team performance, leadership, fitness and sportsmanship.
  • In conjunction with the Firsts Head Coach, oversee strategies for training sessions, game-day style of play and program development.
  • Key involvement in coach recruitment and development.
  • Develop a CGS Football Handbook; including game style, standards and expectations to establish a common ‘CGS style of play’, in conjunction with the Firsts Head Coach.
  • Lead role in a pre-season football program for all students and coaches in Football.
  • Key involvement in training sessions across all teams, assisting coaches and establishing high training standards for players.
  • Complete pre-training and pre-competition activity checklists when leading sessions.
  • Attendance and assistance at year level weekly games (Saturday mornings).
  • Firsts assistant coaching game day role (preferred).
  • Oversee the development of educational (masterclass) sessions and other football events for players, in conjunction with Friends of Football.
  • Promote Football throughout the Camberwell community.
  • Support the Friends of Football and attend meetings as appropriate.
  • Attendance and involvement at the annual Football Presentation Evening.
  • Conduct an annual review of the Football program in conjunction with the Firsts Head Coach, to be presented to the DoS and discussed at the end of the season.
  • Liaise with the Football Academy coach/es to further the development of students involved in the program.
  • Liaise with TAC and local clubs to ensure the best development for our players.
  • Liaise with Old Camberwell Football Club.
  • Identify talented players in local junior football that may benefit from a Camberwell Grammar School education.


Knowledge & Skills

  • Extensive experience working with adolescents in the delivery of sport training and development
  • Demonstrated leadership capability
  • Demonstrated coaching/director experience at a high level
  • Effective time management skills - the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work within agreed timeframes
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders


  • Level 1 coaching accreditation as a minimum
  • Level 2 First Aid and CPR Qualification
  • Working with Children Check
  • Police Check

Time commitment

  • Preseason training and administration
  • In season:
    • Training sessions - Monday to Thursday, 3:30-5pm
    • Firsts home and away matches - Friday, 1-5pm
    • Year level matches - Saturday, 8am-12pm
    • Administration and meeting time
  • Postseason administration and meeting time
