By providing leadership to the Clubs and Classes, through the provision of relevant services and support and in the development of high performance practices, we are committed to building the capability and capacity of sailing to be a successful and leading sport in Australia.
The Performance Support team, in collaboration with AS National Coaches, delivers evidence-based support to enable AS athletes to be the most physically and mentally prepared Olympic sailing team in the world. This new and exciting role of Physical Preparation Lead will be a key addition to the Performance Support Team to continue to enhance the physical preparation of Australian Sailing athletes.
The Physical Preparation Lead for the Australian Sailing Team (AST) is responsible for:
Leading the physical preparation of AST athletes based on the individual needs of national squads and campaigns. A key focus of this role is enhancing the specificity of physical preparation for each class, working closely with National Coaches to optimally prepare athletes for the 2024 & 2028 Olympic Games.
Working collaboratively with the National Institute Network (NIN) and NIN practitioners to deliver the physical preparation strategy from Pathway to AST.
In preparation for the 2024 & 2028 Olympic Games the Physical Preparation Lead will:
Work closely with Coaches in developing a strong understanding of the physiological demands of a complex sport, including integration of class specific physical preparation into squad and individual campaign plans.
Contribute to the AS performance support team to develop independent, robust and resilient athletes in preparation for international regattas.
Continue to increase the training capacity (on and off the water) with the aim of increasing athlete availability.
In collaboration with National Lead Coaches and Performance Support staff periodise and monitor on and off water training load.
Foster a domestic training environment at the National Training Centre (NTC) and other domestic and international DTEs to enhance training ethic and excellence.
Coordinate the implementation of the AS National Testing and Training Protocols across the (NIN).
Develop and maintain a strong relationship with State Sailing Pathway Programs (SSPP) to deliver shared objectives, including a smooth transition of athletes between SSPP and the AST.
Oversee the physical preparation program for SSPP, including national management of Physical Preparation National Network (including Strength and Conditioning and Physiology practitioners).
Participate in AS performance support initiatives including the female athlete health and performance.
Develop and manage strong working relationships with all key internal and external stakeholders to maximise the opportunities to enhance physical preparation and performance.
As directed by the AST, applied research may be conducted in collaboration with AST Athletes, AST Coaches, AST Management, AIS, University partnerships and the AIS to bring physical preparation and performance support innovations into the sport.
