Sunderland AFC have an exciting opportunity for a Foundation Phase Lead with the successful candidate playing a key role within our Academy. Reporting to the Academy Manager and Head of Coaching the successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, skilled practitioner with good experience of developing players in the Foundation Phase and creating a best-in-class environment.

The coach will assess the current programme and identify areas of improvement to further support and drive the development of the Club’s young players. On a day-to-day basis the role will involve managing the Phase Coaching Programme, staffing and player development to ensure that everyone’s development is at the forefront of the programme.

The Foundation Phase Lead will be required to 40 hours per week, Monday to Sunday, with the ability to work flexibly on evenings and weekends to suit the needs of the role.

Confidentiality and excellent communications are essential with the coach expected to provide quality feedback to players, managers, colleagues and parents as required, whilst ensuring information on the Performance Management Application (PMA) is accurate and timely. Additionally, the successful candidate must hold UEFA B Licence (as a minimum) and FA Advanced Youth Award.

The position will include the following roles and responsibilities:

• Effectively lead on individual, group and team planning of the football pathway ensuring each player has an up to date and relevant plan
• Provide consistent and accurate communication on players to the Academy Manager and Head of Coaching
• Align coaches and the coaching programme to the Club’s coaching and playing philosophy
• Oversee the team planning and theming per mesocycle
• Connect and collaborate the Foundation Phase staff surrounding training support, including team selections and composition
• Support appropriately to ensure players receive a holistic transition from the U12 group to the Youth Development Phase (YDP)
• Support Foundation Phase coaches with all aspects of the role, including coaching delivery, to enhance best practice
• To plan, create, deliver and evaluate coaching sessions as scheduled, and that also prioritise individual players development
• Monitor and compete evaluations of all Foundation Phase players for the succession planning process
• Liaise with Club analysts to source and review video clips of individuals and groups, with reference to players individual learning objectives
• Oversee trialists visits and provide evaluation and feedback during the signing / exit process
• Provide a health check / update on coaching operations





The successful candidate will also have attended the EFAiF (First Aid) qualification and the FA Safeguarding Children workshop. Previous coaching experience working within the foundation phase of academy football, experience of leading the foundation phase and an understanding of holistic individual development within children and young adults is essential. Your qualifications and CPD are to be maintained as required for the role.

This position is subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring (DBS) check.
