Cranbrook School is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced Head of Rugby commencing for the start of Term 1, 2021 on a three year full time fixed term contract.


Reporting to the Director of Sport K-12 this position has responsibility for delivering an outstanding rugby program at the School that caters for beginners through to elite level participants, from Year 3 to Year 12.

You will be responsible for the programming and delivery of the rugby program (Years 3-12) including matters of welfare, participation and discipline. You will develop, encourage and grow participation in rugby at Cranbrook in partnership with all stakeholders.

In the summer season, you will also help out with our summer sports program with coaching and/or administrative duties.


You must have the ability to develop and manage an effective and efficient rugby program, with a minimum of five years coaching experience within a school or similar environment and a proven record in developing Junior and Senior rugby players.

Applicants must be excellent communicators, able to work well with all students, parents and staff members, and be willing to take an active and enthusiastic part in the full life of the School.

You will have a commitment to youth sport and proven experience in leading other coaches.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Hold current Level 2 or higher coaching accreditation
  • Have a minimum of five years coaching experience within a school or similar environment
  • Be familiar with the IPSHA, CAS, CIS and NSW All Schools sport procedures, policies and events
  • Be able to work with a high degree of responsibility and organisation
  • Have initiative and the ability to work independently
  • Be able to communicate with people at all levels, with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of age groups, including students, parents, academic staff, sports coaches, grounds/maintenance staff, and external stakeholders
  • Basic computer skills including a preferred knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, or the ability to readily learn and absorb training
  • Be able to prioritise work, meet deadlines and work within a defined budget
  • Hold current CPR and First Aid certificates
  • Hold a current drivers’ licence

Tertiary qualifications relevant to sports coaching or teaching qualifications and NESA accreditation to teach in NSW will be highly regarded.


Key responsibilities of the position include:

  • Programming and delivery of the rugby program for Years 3 to 12 including matters of welfare, participation and discipline
  • Manage all aspects of the running of the rugby program
  • Ensure that the rugby program functions in accordance with the vision and goals of the Cranbrook Sport Department and uphold the ethos and values of Cranbrook School sport at all times
  • Work with other Heads of Sports to ensure that all sports can operate equitably
  • Manage the rugby budget
  • Attend Parent Support Group meetings and be the liaison between the school and the parent community with respect to rugby
  • Attend Cranbrook Sport Department meetings, sport association meetings and any other relevant committees as required
  • Recruit rugby coaches
  • Schedule active supervision at all training and matches
  • Complete all administration duties on time, including in relation to payment of coaches, weekly training schedules, weekly sports reports and Cranbrookian reports
  • Organise pre-season launch and post season award events
  • Organise holiday camps and tours, including a week long holiday camp in each of the April and June/July school holidays
  • Ensure relevant equipment is maintained
  • Prepare documentation include a Rugby Program Manual and Coaches Manual for each season
  • Provide supervision of sports trainings as required
  • Review and plan for the next rugby season during the off season
  • Assist our summer sports program with coaching and/or administrative duties
  • Such other duties as required by the Director of Sport.
