Job Description

Summary

The Network/Audio-Visual Engineer is a member of a team who is responsible for the evaluation, specification, implementation and maintenance of the USOPC’s network, telephony, collaboration, and audio-visual solutions. As a member of the infrastructure team, the Network/AV Engineer will evaluate, design, configure, and implement hardware and software components for cloud and on-premise LAN/WAN, voice, video, chat, instant messaging, and conference room technology solutions.  This person will also help to define strategy and maintenance routines as well as manage inventory and usage reporting. 

Duties & Responsibilities

Network & Telephony Services

 

  1. Make recommendations for solving issues regarding technical performance of the USOPC network and phone systems, including response time, throughput, capacity, use analysis, for all components, including switches, routers, firewalls, VPN devices, servers, storage networks, PBXs, etc.
  2. Troubleshoot and resolve support requests and break/fix issues meeting due dates and SLAs. Requests may be from other IT team members, projects, or as escalations from the help desk.  Additionally, resolve high priority or critical issues when other IT team members are absent as necessary.
  3. Monitor and maintain network and telephone infrastructure components with a target of 99.999% uptime.
  4. Develop and maintain technical network and telephony designs, configurations, schematics, blueprints, and other documentation.
  5. Serve as a consultant for infrastructure projects requiring network, telephone, or collaboration technologies. Set proper expectations regarding capabilities and limitations.  Identify project risks and propose courses of action.
  6. Provide best practices and assist with architecting solutions in the areas of core routing and switching, call routing and PBX services, system monitoring, stability, and core network and telephony services.

Communications & Collaboration Technologies

  1. Gather company requirements and anticipate future needs for communications and collaboration technologies including cloud and on-premise AV, voice, video, chat, instant messaging and conference room technology. Provide equipment and technology recommendations for approved projects.
  2. Evaluate and recommend technology solutions that meet company requirements and that enable company-wide collaboration and communication needs.
  3. Responsible for the installation, configuration, and deployment of communication and collaboration solutions and technologies.
  4. Maintain company communication and collaboration equipment and services through maintenance contracts, troubleshooting, and personal technical experience. Assists with preventive maintenance of all equipment and services.
  5. Maintain accurate equipment inventory. Develop and maintain technical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints, and configurations for all communication and collaboration solutions including conference rooms design and implementation. Work with the AV Lead to provide annual refresh and upgrade proposals.
  6. Troubleshoot and repair communication and collaboration system components and as necessary works with vendors to coordinate warranty and offsite repairs. Responsible for break fix activities and support tickets assigned through the IT ticketing system. 
  7. Develop and maintain equipment end-user guides, troubleshooting instructions, and training guides for existing and new solutions.
  8. May assume the role of Project Manager on projects and live events. Responsible for all production elements involved with such events.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, etc.)

Licensure & Certification:

  • Network and telephony service certifications preferred
  • Network certifications such as Cisco CCNA preferred
  • Collaboration tool certifications in the areas of SIP, Skype for Business, VOIP, etc. are desired
  • Audio, video conferencing, or control equipment manufacturer certifications a plus. (BlueJeans Specialist, Polycom Certified Video Conferencing Engineer, Cisco Video Network Specialist)

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of networking and telephony experience. Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Demonstratable experience with operating systems hardware and software with an emphasis in communications and collaboration technology
  • Experience responding to customer's service-related issues promptly including system installation, configuration, troubleshooting and repair
  • Experience configuring and maintaining network technologies (WAN/LAN switching, routing, IP protocol, MPLS, VPN, etc.)
  • Experience in network capacity planning
  • On-prem PBX experience with focus on Avaya systems a plus
  • Installing, supporting, maintaining, and troubleshooting room control systems, Polycom video conferencing systems, BlueJeans, WebEx, Zoom or other Web Conferencing experience
  • Experience reading/interpreting wiring diagrams, schematics, and blueprints

Skills:

  • Exceptional network troubleshooting and problem isolation skills
  • Understanding of and experience in IT network, telephony, and AV (OSI model, TCP/IP, LAN/WAN technologies, routing, switching, SIP, VOIP, H.264, H.323, etc.)
  • Detailed knowledge of IP addressing, DNS, TCP, UDP, ICMP, and packet capture analysis
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Must be able to provide friendly customer service to all levels of customers
  • Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines, and priorities
  • Proficient in Office 365, Visio, and other productivity tools
  • Proven ability to plan and complete projects and execute on specific tasks
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Tools, Equipment, & Conditions

  • Must be willing to work after hours and on weekends as necessary for systems upgrades, maintenance, and break / fix
  • Ability to share after-hours on call duties with other team members
  • Personal computers and network/telephony diagnostic equipment
  • Office environment, multi-level building on multi-building site
  • Extensive us of fingers/hands, some bending and lifting up to 50lbs
  • Some travel, both domestically and internationally
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential job function
