The Head Athletic Trainer will manage the day-to-day sports medicine operations for the Sacramento Republic FC professional soccer club.  In this capacity, the Head Athletic Trainer will provide injury prevention strategies, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation for players’ medical problems while keeping accurate records.  Duties will be performed in coordination with the designated UC Davis Team Physician(s) and with the staff at Results Physical Therapy. The Head Athletic Trainer will work closely with the Head Coach and any auxiliary medical staff.  A full-time employee, the Athletic Trainer will attend all first-team trainings, scrimmages and home and away games. The tone of the locker room is often set by the environment of the training room, and the Head Athletic Trainer will help shape the culture of the Club.

  • Perform as Certified Athletic Trainer in managing the work-related health care of players.  Such health care includes, but is not limited to: first aid/emergency care, on-site injury evaluation, application of appropriate modalities, developing rehabilitation and prevention programs, as well as conducting rehabilitation and making medical referrals.
  • Assist in the engagement, development, and management of the Republic FC medical training staff, including, if and as applicable, student athletic trainers and massage school students.
  • Work in conjunction with the Club’s strength coach to ensure safety in the design and implementation of fitness, nutrition and conditioning programs customized to meet individual needs.
  • Order, maintain and inventory supplies and clinical equipment.
  • Keep training room and clinic area safe, clean and organized.
  • Establish and maintain positive training room culture.
  • Incorporate new methods and techniques arising from the ever-changing field of sports medicine.
  • Maintain a complete, accurate, and up to date roster of player health and participation records in the League-provided electronic medical record system.
  • Electronically document first report of injury, player treatments, and return to play dates for various purposes (e.g. workers compensation claims, research).
  • Communicate on a regular basis with the technical staff and UC Davis Team Physicians regarding injury reports and updates.
  • Initiate and collaborate internally on insurance/worker’s compensation claims for players.
  • Comply with all USL medical policies, protocol, and operations manual, as well as with all applicable employment policies and laws.
  • Coordinate and schedule physical examinations and medical referrals for players to determine their ability to compete.
  • Provide medical assistance to the UC Davis Team Physicians.
  • Under the direction of the supervising UC Davis Team Physician, assist with the organization and maintenance of applicable pharmaceutical inventory and records.
  • Supervise any assistant trainers and other medical staff, if and as applicable.
  • Demonstrate and apply interpersonal skills required to work effectively with players, coaches, other team personnel and USL staff.
  • Counsel players regarding dietary needs, nutritional supplements and League/FIFA banned substances.
  • Participate in community service/educational programs related to sports medicine.
  • Participate in activities/meetings/programs as required by USL.
  • Such other duties, activities, and roles related to the application and/or administration of sports medicine operations for the Club, its playing squads, and/or the Academy as the Employer from time to time may designate in its sole and absolute discretion. 
  • Master’s degree in Kinesiology or a related field. 
  • Current certification through the Board of Certification (BOC).
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer in a sports environment, preferably with soccer.
  • Experience using injury-tracking software.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience with purchasing, inventory, and maintaining supplies and clinical equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license/reliable transportation required.
  • Flexible hours, including nights, weekends and holidays, as well as team travel.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform under high-pressure situations, with the ability to adapt.
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is exposed to indoor working conditions, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very loud, depending on the event as well as the location.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; run; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
