Producer/Director, RTÉ Sport

RTÉ is Ireland's national public-service media organisation. A leader in Irish media, RTÉ provides comprehensive, cost-effective, free-to-air multi-media services to the public in Ireland and audiences internationally. RTÉ Sport is responsible for host broadcasting, producing and directing major national and international sporting events and associated programming.

RTÉ Sport is now looking for an experienced Producer/Director with an enthusiasm, and passion for all sport. We are seeking highly creative and experienced individuals to bring their skills and ambitions to RTÉ Sports varied portfolio, and to the Irish audience. Applicants’ skill set should include directing multi camera outside broadcasts & producing major sporting events. They should be familiar with RTÉ Sports output on all platforms and should understand the challenges of working in the highly competitive Irish media landscape.

The main responsibilities of the role include:

  • Directing multi camera coverage of a variety of sporting events, both at venue and in studio, in line with production and contractual specifications
  • Delivery of programmes, series, and/ or major sporting events to the highest production and editorial standards in a timely and efficient manner across digital and linear platforms
  • Initiating and developing original and distinctive programme ideas/ production enhancements and bringing them to fruition in collaboration with internal and external colleagues and stakeholders
  • Knowledge and understanding of industry technological advancements with experience to introduce and develop these elements to enhance Sport productions both in studio and on location
  • Lead, motivate and support a team ensuring that the programme/event vision is communicated, understood and delivered
  • Managing the financial & technical resources while also encouraging and developing production and on-air teams in a manner that will maximise production value and viewer experience
  • Ensuring content reflects our diverse audiences
  • Ensuring that the team employ safe working practices and work in a safe environment complying with RTÉ’s Health & Safety Regulations

Applicant Skills and Experience Requirements:

  • Significant experience in multi camera directing, both venue and studio based, across a diverse range of sports
  • Previous experience of producing diverse, innovative and creative programmes and capable of originating and developing strong production plans that can deliver ideas within budget and resource frameworks
  • Highly developed planning and oragnisational skills. Ability to manage several areas of work at the one time, prioritising and delivering to strict deadlines & contractual specifications. Capable of reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities, particularly in a live situation
  • Strong budgetary management skills, excellent people and resource management skills and a proven ability to manage production across all platforms
  • Ability and judgement to uphold fairness, balance cultural sensitivity and legality in RTÉ’s programmes
  • Diplomatic communication skills in dealing with a variety of personalities at all levels and the ability to work effectively as either team leader or member
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of RTÉ’s programme-making standards and guidelines and have strong editorial and journalistic skills and judgement

The Producer Director has a 24/7 liability and will have to work nights/late nights and weekends, as programme material/events dictate.

This role will be offered on a full-time ongoing basis and the salary scale for Producer Directors is €60,000 pa to €90,000 pa.

In addition, we are looking to create a panel of suitably skilled Producer/Directors who are keen to bring their creative production & editorial skills to RTE Sports’ coverage of major events. This panel will assist with covering short- and long-term vacancies that may arise in Sports over a period of 24 months from the commencement of this panel.
