Graduate Assistant - Canford School - Salary £12822 plus free accommodation and meals - Closing date 13 April 2020
We wish to appoint, for September 2020, enthusiastic and committed university graduates to coach sport, help in boarding houses, to assist with the weekend activities programme, and to assist in an academic department appropriate to the strengths of the graduate. Applicants must have the ability to coach at least one sport from rowing, hockey, rugby, netball, lacrosse and cricket, along with the willingness to help in other sports. Reliable, punctual and motivated to deliver the highest standards in education, applicants will also be willing to be involved in boarding house duties. These positions are designed to allow graduates who might be considering a teaching career to experience life in a boarding school as fully as possible. A number of our previous graduates have gone on to complete teacher training courses. We are also happy to receive applications from those wishing to take a year out, but not necessarily considering teaching as a career. These positions are on a fixed term contract for one year. PERSONAL QUALITIES AND ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED * University graduate (or embarked on course of studies leading to a university degree). * The ability to coach at least one sport from hockey, rugby, netball, lacrosse, cricket and rowing; the willingness to help in other sports. * Reliable, punctual, motivated to deliver the highest standards in education. * Enthusiasm. * Willingness to be involved in the life of the school. MAIN OBJECTIVES To coach sport: * To help with the coaching of sport (or another activity) for each of the three terms on up to six afternoons a week. * To have sufficient playing and/or coaching experience of hockey (two terms), rugby, netball, or rowing (two terms) to coach a team for at least two of the three terms, including accompanying the team to matches (mainly on Saturday afternoons) and umpiring/refereeing if necessary. * (Not essential) To be able to help the Heads of Sport in specialist areas such as strength & conditioning, match analysis, etc. To assist in a boarding house: * To be on duty in a boarding house for two evenings a week, while a tutor is also on duty, to enable the tutor to spend some time with their tutor group. A graduate assistant will usually be assigned to two boarding houses and spend one evening (7.30-9.00) as week in each. To assist with the Shell weekend programme: * To help run an activity session for Shells on three Sunday afternoons a term. There will usually be flexibility over which Sundays these are. General: * Graduate assistants may occasionally be asked to help supervise pupils on school trips and expeditions. * All graduate assistants will be accommodated on-site, either in shared accommodation (for two) with another graduate assistant; or in a self-contained bedsit. Two positions will be reserved for native speakers (or equivalent fluency) in Spanish, German or French, who will be expected: * To conduct approximately 5 hours of small-group conversation classes per week with mainly Year 11 GCSE pupils, mostly outside lesson times. * To schedule these classes and ensure that pupils understand the arrangements and the pupils are followed up if they do not attend.
